History of Gimnazija Bežigrad
Gimnazija Bežigrad was established in 1936, when two boys’ high schools merged and moved to their present location in the Bežigrad district of Ljubljana. Since 1947, the school has been coeducational, and today it enrols more girls than boys.
Over the years, the school’s name has changed in response to educational reforms. It was initially known as I. Gimnazija Bežigrad, later renamed the Mathematics and Sciences Secondary School, and eventually returned to its current name, Gimnazija Bežigrad.
Gimnazija Bežigrad is a public secondary school offering the “Gimnazija” program, which prepares students for university education. The vast majority of its graduates continue their studies at universities.
In September 1990, the school introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), initially admitting a group of twenty Slovenian students. Since then, the programme has welcomed a new group of students each year, selected from secondary schools across Slovenia.
In 1993, Gimnazija Bežigrad began admitting international students into its two IB programmes: the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students in Grades 9 and 10, and the Diploma Programme (DP) for students in Grades 11 and 12.
Today, Gimnazija Bežigrad combines a proud tradition with a forward-looking approach to education, preparing students to succeed in a global society.
