Key features of the grammar school programme

Grammar school education programme

The grammar school programme is a general education programme intended for students who wish to continue their studies at university.

The programme concludes with the high school graduation exam (i.e. matura), which consists of five subjects: Slovene, a foreign language, mathematics, and two elective subjects. Passing the high school graduation exam is a requirement for university admission.

University admission

In cases where admission to a particular faculty is limited, performance in the Matura examination and overall academic achievement play an important role. Some faculties also consider achievements in individual Matura subject exams as an additional admission requirement.

Elective Matura subjects

In the current school year, Gimnazija Bežigrad offers the following elective Matura subjects: English, German, French, Spanish, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, and Computer science.

If there are enough applicants, we will also organise Matura preparation in Economics and Art History.

Matura preparation lessons

Preparation for the Matura in compulsory subjects takes place throughout all four years of study, while preparation for elective subjects mainly takes place in the 3rd and 4th years.

Specialised classes

Students may choose between different specialised classes when enrolling:

  • Mathematics-focused class: The second foreign language is beginner German. In the 2nd year, one additional lesson of mathematics is added to the curriculum.
  • Enhanced foreign language class: Students may choose German, French, or Spanish as their second foreign language with an extended programme.
  • General class: The second foreign language may be beginner German, French, or Spanish.

The mathematics-focused class is intended primarily for students with a strong interest in mathematics and physics; it is recommended for students with the Vegova or Stefan awards. The extended programme of German, French, or Spanish is intended for students with a good prior knowledge of the chosen language (e.g. as an elective subject in primary school or at least three years of informal learning) and an interest in further developing their language skills.

In the grammar school sports programme class, admission is subject to appropriate sporting achievements. Based on these, candidates are classified into A, B, and C status in accordance with the criteria defined by the national sports federations. In this class, the second foreign language is beginner German.
